Introduction of the Keynote Speakers

Craig Resta,

Professor of Music Education from Kent State University (Ohio USA) will be the keynote speaker for this event!
Resta holds degrees from University of Maryland College Park, Indiana University, and Baylor University (United States). His music teaching experience encompasses elementary through doctoral levels, and performance background comprises early and modern strings. Research interests include historical inquiry and analysis, sociocultural paradigms in music education, educational leadership and arts advocacy, and educator preparation at multiple levels. Performance activity includes programs in recognized venues with Armonia Nova and Bernardus Medieval Music Ensemble, among others. He has engaged with professional conferences for national and international events of the National Association for Music Education (NAFME), American String Teachers Association (ASTA), College Music Society (CMS), Cultural Diversity in Music Education (CDIME), and International Society for Music Education (ISME), among others. Overall, he has presented more than 80 sessions, workshops, performances, and related professional activities in 10+ countries internationally. Professor Resta has published research in the Journal of Historical Research in Music EducationContributions to Music EducationBulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Music Educators JournalAmerican String Teacher, and as contributor to the Grove Dictionary of American Music. He served as Editor of the juried research journal, Contributions to Music Education (2013-2020); and a principal publication is his book, Valuing Music in Education: A Charles Fowler Reader (Oxford University Press, 2017). The content centers on 50 essays, with critical commentary, by the notable arts education advocate Dr. Charles Fowler, on the role and purpose of musical experiences in schools and society. This text is of interest to scholars and laypeople alike, highlighting the importance of arts education to diverse audiences. Dr. Resta is presently Professor of Music Education at Kent State University (Ohio USA), where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses (BME, MME, PhD) in string and instrumental methods, pre-service music teacher preparation, online classes and pedagogies, and music education research and foundational studies.

 

 

Janine Paula Magnin

Originally from South Africa and now based in the UK, Janine Paula Magnin is in the final stages of a PhD in vocal pedagogy at the University of Limerick and works as a researcher and children’s singing teacher. Magnin’s qualifications are: MA (music education) from the Institute of Education (University College London), PGCE (University of Cape Town), LTCL in Musical Theatre (Waterfront Theatre School) and BMus: voice and English literature (University of Cape Town).

Her research focuses on vocal pedagogy, vocal identity in child singers, and the pedagogy of voice education. Her current research is called The Voice Within the Room – a study which investigates the experiences of female adolescent singers within their singing lessons from the perspectives of the adolescent singing student, the young adult looking retrospectively back at their lessons, and the pedagogy of the singing teachers.

 

 

Eustace Wilken

Eustace started with Yamaha SA 7 years ago as Product Manager of the Brass and Woodwind Department, working closely with the Yamaha office in Dubai. He comes from a professional playing background on Trumpet and Sax and has been teaching for more than 20 years. At Yamaha he trained as a Woodwind Technician and opened the only Yamaha Woodwind Service Centre in SA. In 2024 he launched the Yamaha Young Soloist Music Competition in SA and is currently preparing to launch the competition for 2025.

As Product Manager, he looks after the Brass and Woodwind Department, serves as the woodwind technician, manages the Yamaha Competition and heads the Yamaha Recorder Outreach Program across SA. He presents workshops for Yamaha in Instrument Care and Maintenance as well as presentations on Yamaha Brass and Woodwind instruments. He has 12 private students – Sax / Trumpet and performs in the greater JHB area as a sax player.
